Ultrasuede® using 100% Plant-based polyester adopted by APURE
Toray developed an advanced vehicle mockup named APURE through collaboration between strategic design studio neomind and the German public transport authority Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV). We showcased APURE at InnoTrans 2024, the international trade fair for transport technology.
This APURE Shuttle has won a Design Concept 2024 category prize in the Red Dot Design Award program. The prize recognized the sustainable interior design featuring plant-based and recycled materials and the practical layout balancing high capacity, safety, and comfort. Ultrasuede® and Ultrasuede® nu are used for its interior.

APURE Interior
The APURE interior stands out with its timeless design and distinctive colors. The space feels like a living room, thanks to soft lighting and new upholstery, offering a refreshing change from standard bus interiors.
Warm wood tones and the graduated shades of green on the seat upholstery give the shuttle the natural look that is needed more in urban spaces.
Plenty of open space and easy access areas, all designed to keep the passenger at the center of the experience.
The spaces are adaptable to passengers’ needs. The left side, featuring a mother-child seat, can be turned into a family area. On the right, an optional folding seat allows for face-to-face seating.
The shuttle provides space for an optional wheelchair area, highlighted by floor light guides. The spacious interior also allows for easy luggage storage under the benches.
Spacious seating and premium features define APURE’s unique character. Passengers can enjoy wireless charging in the side storage, enhanced safety with seat belts, and interchangeable seat covers for a consistently clean experience.The design seamlessly incorporates these safety features, making them a natural part of the experience.
Material
The shuttle’s interior is designed to be sustainable, stylish and comfortable, thanks to innovations like Ultrasuede nu® that covers the seating, and Ultrasuede® used for all around the interior and the pillars.
Those are materials using 100% plant-based polyester*, combining delicate texture reminiscent of premium leather with eco-consciousness, and offer a fine tactile experience while meeting environmental and safety standards.
The unique soft touch with luxurious texture creates a warm atmosphere and high-quality travel space that has never been seen before in normal public transport.
It’s luxury and reminiscent of premium aniline leather, but has also high functionality like breathabilty, providing passengers a smooth and comfortable ride. It can give a great advantage also for operators, because of its light weight and super durability.
At InnoTrans 2024, we gave away the mouse pads made of Ultrasuede® using 100% plant-based polyester* since we wanted more people to touch and feel our materials.
Ultrasuede® is a material that moves forward toward the beautiful possibilities of the future.
